Although moving home can be stressful, it’s also exciting! To ensure you stay positive about all the associated upheaval read through this handy checklist for pain free home removals.

Make a list!

It sounds obvious but taking the time to prepare before you pack up anything will really help to ensure your home removal runs smoothly. Think about each room and also what will go into each box. Use a system, however simple, to list items in rooms and then in boxes and number or code them for easy reference the other end. Consider putting a copy of the list as the last thing that goes in the box so as soon as you open it, you know what’s in there.

Prepare your packaging in advance

Gone are the days when we could get all our boxes from supermarkets or large stores (they’re too good at recycling!) so think ahead to get a rough idea of how many boxes or crates you might need, as well as specialist packaging such as bubble wrap or soft material for fragile or oversize items. Home removal companies often have handy online tools to help you work out how many boxes you might need as well as being able to supply useful stuff like tape, string, marker pens and so on. This will also help you pack in advance rather than thinking you can leave it to moving day – which always results in a lot of additional stress and often tears!

Label!

Clearly labelling all your boxes and other containers will reduce headaches when it comes to unloading and unpacking the other end.

It also helps home removal companies to know where things need to go and remember that they can also help with unpacking. Never underestimate how useful professional removal firms can be!

Efficient packing

There really is an art to packing a box effectively. Books, DVD’s and other such objects are easy enough but don’t forget how heavy they can become. Even the strongest removals man might struggle with an entire set of encyclopedias in one box however satistfying it feels to fill it! Similarly, don’t underfill your boxes. Remember that as you are labelling box number 123, you’re totting up the number you have to unpack and that somebody has to move! Fine if you have a couple of weeks of work, not so good otherwise.

Wrap breakable stuff carefully and consider strong sacks for soft squidgy stuff that doesn’t need to be so protected.

Soft furnishings

Be careful with these – anything with soft edges or light coloured material can get easily damaged when it is moved or packed in against other not so soft things. Consider covering with throws or similar to ensure they are protected.

Moving home – use a removals company or do it yourself?

Most people don’t look forward to moving home. It’s stressful, hard work and can be expensive, so many of us try to cut corners by doing at least some of the moving ourselves. But in the long run, does this help or hinder the process of moving home? What are the real benefits of using professionals to help?

Removal companies can pack up your house for you!

This alone is probably a good enough reason to use a removals company. The arduous process of finding boxes, protective wrapping, figuring out what goes where and all the packing and disarray, is kept to a minimum as the professionals take over and do all this for you. What’s more, they can unpack and reassemble beds and other furniture for you at the other end if you need them to, completing a smooth and stress-free transition from old home to new home.

Removal companies can do all the heavy lifting and move outsize and specialist objects

Moving home is a physical challenge as well as a mental one. Using a removals firm means no lifting of bulky boxes, so no risk of damage to you or your property. Home removal professionals are also skilled at relocating specialist and particularly large or awkward objects, such as piano’s and oversize furniture that can’t be disassembled.

Professional home removal firms can help with storage solutions

Based on what you need to store, you can obtain and compare quotes to find storage in a convenient location to your new home and at a competitive price.

Home removal firms can arrange parking and any related permits or authorization

Which means one less thing to worry about. They can take responsibility for getting your belongings from one location to the next, without you needing to think about directions or unfamiliar routes. Plus it means you don’t have to negotiate a van or truck you are not used to driving which is likely to be a lot bigger than your normal mode of transport! This leaves you free to deal with kids, pets or just yourselves!

It’s not as expensive as you think

You can obtain a range of quotes from specialist moving companies to ensure you get a good deal based on your removal requirements. If you were doing it all yourself the costs of packaging and van hire soon add up, not to mention the other ‘costs’ in terms of time off work, mental anxiety and physical exhaustion! Leaving it to the experts means you can enjoy your new home quickly and easily with far less stress. Worth every penny!
